Mooreland Sports Club Review

Review by Claudia Wood

It was a quiet night on Friday at Moorebank Sports Club, affectionately known as Sporties by the locals, but don’t let that fool you, because even a slow night at Sporties means that the bar is packed and the tables are full. Slightly overdressed in blazers and skirts, my friend and I walked in to a loud array of groups filling the bar and every chair in sight. The patterned carpet and beautiful wooden bookcase as well as the lights hanging above the bar distract from the fact that the car park is dirt and gravel. With many areas to sit, we grabbed a drink and ventured outside to the terrace area. With cushiony seats and modern tables, Sporties is a great place to catch up with friends and have a great night.

Back inside for more drinks, we explore the cocktail bar boasting $7 cocktails between 7 and 9 and $9 hereon after. A stage for bands to play surrounded by tables and comfortable chairs is packed and the band playing showcased a great array of chilled music that everybody knows the words to. At the other end, the main bar is packed with people grabbing drinks to take back to their group of friends and everybody knows each other. The service is quick and the drinks are reasonably priced. As the night continues, Sporties picks up, drinks flowing and chatter growing louder as more people enter the club. Sporties is relaxed and fun and a great social place for end of week drinks and while some people can get a little rowdy, the security is always there to stop things from getting out of hand. However, this is still a quiet night.

Friday and Saturday nights at Sporties are usually filled with the younger crowd of locals and their friends having drinks and catch ups and supporting their local bands looking to have a good time in an area where taxis are readily available and getting home is not too far away. However, being a long weekend, many have ventured or will venture into the city to celebrate. For those who decided to stay local, Sporties is great if you’re not into the Kings Cross club scene or you want to be able to hear your friends talk over music for the night.

With reasonably priced drinks and a great atmosphere, Sporties is the place to be in the local area on a Friday or Saturday night to hang out with your whole network of friends.
