Max Watts (Formerly The Hi-Fi Review) Review

Review by Kelly Teng

The Hi-Fi may be a foreign place to some Sydneysiders, but both in Melbourne and Brisbane the venue is one synonymous with live music, cheap gigs, and just a rockin’ good time.

While we had to wait a while, The Hi-Fi has finally graced Sydney’s shores. Opening its doors in March 2012, this venue injected itself right into the heart of Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter – a message that it’s here to stay and rock it out with the big boys like Sydney Football Stadium and Fox Studios.

Sporting an angular black exterior, the only way you would know The Hi-Fi was a music venue (besides the obvious lime green name stamped on the outside wall) is by the shape of the front, which looks very much like a large sound system. Stepping inside, it’s clear this place was designed for one thing and one thing only: gigs.

The plain black walls give patrons no distraction from the central act, and the bars are discreetly located (although obvious enough for any punter to find easily) on the rims of the standing zone to maximise space for moshing around and just having a good time. Upstairs there’s seating available that overlooks the crowd and has a prime view of the stage, plus another bar for easy access to drinks. The stage itself is definitely a good size for the crowd it entertains, and the lighting and sound both reflect the quality associated with the venue’s name.

Drinks are about as reasonably priced as you could expect here; however, what you’re really paying for is the chance to drink at a venue while listening to a fantastic band perform live. Prepare to enjoy these drinks with a very mixed crowd though: the age of patrons will range from early twenties to mid-forties depending on what type of event it is. With that being said, it definitely adds to The Hi-Fi’s reputation as a venue where anyone and everyone can come to enjoy a good gig.

And here’s another reason The Hi-Fi filled a gap in Sydney’s music scene: while the city most definitely doesn’t lack in diversity, few have the capability to pull together such talented artists so consistently. With its long-standing history as a quality Australian live music venue, The Hi-Fi has the means to attract great acts including Sneaky Sound System, Cobra Starship, Manchester Orchestra, Aqua, and Mickey Avalon. And even through all of that, gigs are still affordable, ranging from $10 to $60.

Welcome to Sydney, The Hi-Fi. We definitely hope you’re here to stay.
