The Elizabethan Village Pub is situated in the hills of Perth, about 40 minutes South East of Perth. The pub added to the original Cobwebs Restaurant which is a part of the Elizabethan Village complex in 1992, along with the Last Drop Brewery. The original concept for the Village and it’s surrounds can be viewed in the following presentation which has been assembled by Sally-Ann, the daughter of Leo Fowler, who’s vision it was to bring Shakespears’ birthplace to Western Australia.

The Elizabethan Village Pub Review

Review by Sarah Warner

Hidden away within the tranquil setting of the rolling Perth foothills, in the locality of Bedfordale, you will find the quaint and charming Elizabethan Village Pub, an Old English pub, nestled in the heart of the Elizabethan Village Complex.

Built in the 1970s, the original concept for the Elizabethan Village and its surrounds was based on the founder and builder, Leo Fowler’s, romantic vision to bring complete replicas of the famous Bard, William Shakespeare’s birth place, and Anne Hathaway’s cottage, to Western Australia. No expense was spared in the creation of the village, with the end result a gorgeous and character-rich setting, transporting you back to an age of refinement and splendour.

Added to the original Cobwebs Restaurant in 1992, the Elizabethan Village Pub, with its classical, Old English architecture, cobblestoned pathways, shady trellised archways, sprawling romantic courtyards and lush and tended gardens, is a magical place to relax and unwind with family and friends. On a sunny day, you can lounge back and soak up the atmosphere in the gardens and gazebo and in the colder, winter months, cuddle up beside the warmth of the fire.

The Elizabethan Village Pub is available for a variety of events, including weddings, parties, conferences and functions. Facilities include The Leo Fowler Function Centre, with its dedicated full bar facilities, sound system and a bain-marie for buffet menus (starting from $50 per head) and the separate gazebo setting and luscious garden surroundings of The Village Green.

The Elizabethan Village Pub has live entertainment on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons, with regular live music acts including The Hog Hill Boys, with their fusion of Rocking Hillbilly Blues with Ulster Irish Trad, Beatz Wurkin, Ronnie Domp and Bobby Marchini and the Blonde La De Da, with their blend of Jazz, Pop, Blues and Rock. The first Sunday of every month will also bring Shindig to the centre stage, playing their vast repertoire of 50s and 60s music.

The Cobwebs Restaurant will give you the distinct impression that you have been transported back in time, and with its cosy ambience, great service and extensive menu selection (including vegetarian options), it is sure to cater to every taste and age group. With hearty food and consistently generous portion sizes, available at good prices, there are too many favourites to choose from. A selection of fixed buffet menus for functions and events is also available.

The kitchen is open for lunch Monday to Saturday from 6 PM to 8:30 PM (with last orders taken by 8:15 PM) and Sundays and Public Holidays from 12 PM to 3 PM (with last orders taken by 2:45 PM). The kitchen is open for dinner Sunday to Thursday from 6 PM to 8:30 PM (with last orders taken by 8:15 PM) and Friday and Saturday 6 PM to 9:00 PM (with last orders taken by 8:45 PM).

The Elizabethan Village Pub also has a wonderful selection of drinks available, including Weston’s Draught Cider on tap and an excellent range of beers, locally brewed in a traditional European style, from the award-winning Last Drop Brewery. Some old favourites available on the menu include the Last Drop Brewery Bohemian Pilsner (4.8% alc./vol.), a straw coloured Czech-style lager, brewed from the local pale and European speciality malts, Czech Saaz noble hops and the original lager fermenting yeast; the Last Drop Brewery Crystal Wheat Beer (4.8% alc./vol.), brewed with authentic Bavarian yeast, loads of wheat malt and German Hallertauer hops; the Last Drop Brewery Bock (4.5% alc./vol.), a dark lager created from a carefully selected number of Australian and European specialty malts, German Northern Brewer and Czech Saaz hops and the Last Drop Brewery Light Beer (3.5% alc./vol.), blended from several types of Australian and European speciality malts, just to name a few.

If you don’t feel like venturing back to the city, Bed and Breakfast accommodation is available close to the Elizabethan Village Pub, including the Lakeside Country Resort, the Armadale Cottage Bed and Breakfast and the William Shakespeare’s Guest House, a replica of the original Shakespeare house in Stratford upon Avon, in Warwickshire, England.

Overall, if you are looking for something a little different and a little quirky, with a relaxing atmosphere, live music and beautiful surrounds, the Elizabethan Village Pub is a delightful place to dine with family and friends and will appeal to old and young patrons alike.
