Queens Hotel Review

Review By Cassandra Auzin

I was told by my best friend when we arrived at the Queen’s on Friday night that if I wrote anything bad about the Queen’s, she’d hit me. It reminded me just how much the place is a staple to many people living around the Mt. Lawley area.

We arrived around nine to find the place so packed in the courtyard that I’m pretty sure the guards weren’t counting how many were coming in and leaving. In fact, they weren’t really checking I.Ds either, now that I think about it…

Inside, the bar was three deep; the walls lined with the familiar lolly vodkas that haunted the rock glasses of my early twenties. The bar had enough tenders to keep it going, but be prepared to wait as the guy in front of you orders two beers, three different types of spirits and a Midori and lemonade. You have been warned!

The drinks are well priced. The five cocktails on the menu sit cheaply at $12.50 and the vodka infusions (lolly vodka) are $8.80. The menus and even staff are reluctant to share the prices of their beers, but no pint sits over $10.

It’s easier to buy drinks downstairs and then move upstairs to the open-air level where the awnings are bare and funky. A DJ occupies the space from Thursday to Sunday with the music being just loud enough to enhance the move but not so loud that you can’t hear yourself think.

While there, we were meeting a friend of my best friend, who turned out to be there with a group that included one of my friends. Yes, Perth is a small world, but at the Queen’s it seems to be even smaller.

With a relaxed atmosphere and the familiarity of a small town, the Queen’s Hotel is a place to mingle with those you know and those they know. But be warned, bulk up on the drinks per time at the bar or be prepared to take things slowly.
