Review of Troika Bar

Review by Manning Brown

Troika Bar, located in a secluded, unassuming corner on Melbourne’s Little Lonsdale Street, is a quaint location ideally suited to a wide-ranging demographic looking to start the night, or indeed end it, on a rather high note.

Troika brings a touch of class and elegance to an evening out in Melbourne. With a slightly older (around 25-35), and incredibly friendly crowd, the place makes a surprising leap to life with its red wash, almost noir style lighting. The décor helps one to feel at home, a home that holds a certain air of sophistication with its luxurious leather lounges and solid wooden tables, offering a comfort not often found in the many modern bars of the city.

Prices in the establishment, although not overly cheap, are no more than what you would expect to pay elsewhere in the city. One is also offered a far more unique variety of beverages. From their luxury imports, to the exclusive mulled wine, Troika presents not an excessively vast or confusing array of drinks, but a succinct list that poses choices ranging from the immeasurably distinctive experience of German “smoke beer”, to some finer wines that one is not likely to see on their regular bottle shop shelf.

The smoke beer is a particular highlight. Brewed by Schlenkerla and at $13 for a 500mL bottle, the drink warmly coats your throat on the way down, an odd sensation for a cold beer. It can be best described as drinking a smoked ham, and alone is enough reason to pay a visit to Troika.

Yet the smoked beer is far from the only reason to make this place one to frequent. As well as the drinks range and the intimate atmosphere, Troika also offers a secluded and equally as warm smoking room toward the rear of the premises. Here you will often find people with a glass of scotch on the rocks and cigars, heartily discussing the topic of the day or animatedly laughing at each other’s jokes, and they are always welcoming of other parties.

This is what helps Troika to stand out, despite its aura of class, one is not likely to feel out of place or be outcast by the more pretentious patrons that you may come across in other bars. Rather, the regulars invite you into their midst, helping you to feel included and at home, as though you are amongst old friends.

As well as revelling in intelligence and comfort, Troika also knows how to show you a good time. The smooth mix of eccentric jazz is always at hand to be turned up, as the upper seating area is turned into a dance floor for those ready for a bit more action.

These factors combine to make Troika both an intriguing, and quirky experience. A thoroughly enjoyable establishment with staff as welcoming as the crowd, and as capable as any top professional around.

Troika Bar is available for private functions.
