What To Expect @ 401 The Order

Review By Alyssa Jackson

If you’re looking for an enjoyable and affordable night out, crave a quality cocktail and your first thought at the sound of 50 Cent’s ‘Candy Shop’ is getting down low for a cheeky booty shake, then I suggest 401 The Order is worth a shot!

I’m not fond of walking several blocks around the city in upholstered heels so the two minute walk along Swanston Street from Melbourne Central was quite a relief. Having never heard of the venue before, I was unaware what to expect. After spotting the large highlighted numbers “401” with a rope draping down the side of the old city building, with no queue out the front at 10:30pm, my first impression upon arrival was, “I hope it’s not dead!” Gaining free entry (already a plus!) and climbing two staircases I was immediately allured by the RNB beats and modern decor perfectly fit for the exceptionally chill vibe of the place.

Upon entering, you are immediately exposed to a glistening disco ball with illuminating light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Although barely a teenager (almost 20), I have generally ventured out to venues with a younger targetdemographic. In saying this, walking into a well-dressed crowd of people (shirts and cocktail dresses) aged mid-late 20s was a nice change from the snapback wearing and midriffshowing dresses that are stereotypically a given within younger crowds.

There was an ideal amount of comfortable seating lined up behind one another overlooking the spacious and not too over crowded dance floor, where there was generous space to relax and socialise over a cocktail or two! The enticing 2 for 1 $18 special on cocktails before midnight is hard to resist when one page of the drink menu is dedicated to the classic and also more exotic items, such as the “Shammojo” or “Sticky Vicar”. If you would rather enjoy the night with a glass of Pinot Noir or a Chardonnay, at an affordable $8-12, this is also more the reason to luxuriate in the laid back tranquility.

After being lost in the sensation of dancing to a few old school classics, I had almost forgotten to check out the decked out rooftop! Comparing the inside modern style bar and dance floor below, it wasn’t quite what I had expected. There was no music, so it was more of a social smokers area. My only suggestion would be to have a separate area for non-smokers to also gain access to the rooftop for a breath offresh air without being caught up in an array of smoke clouds. Not that I was overly bothered with the laid back and relaxed atmosphere, the interior had caught my attention from the moment I entered so I was more compelled to utter the best loved hip hop tunes and lounge inside.

It’s undoubtedly a great venue for those who have further interest in a more higher class style (yet affordable) bars, and have those irresistible urges to dance at an old school beat. So grab 2 for 1 delectable cocktails and release your inner Beyoncé because 401, with such a convenient location is definitely a must go to venue fresh off the block!
