What to Expect @ The Republic Hotel

Review by Renata Sain

The Republic Bar on Elizabeth Street in North Hobart is the kind of place that reminds you why Hobart is a great place to live, and culturally speaking, ‘on the map’. The alternative, art-deco Bar has been going strong for a number of years and is a favourite with Hobart’s intellectual and cultural base.

Always willing to support local artists and community groups, the Republic Bar is an advocate of many good causes and an outlet for individuals to enjoy their space far from the mainstream of regular Hobart nightlife.

An eclectic collection of treasures and posters that line the Republic’s interior, mostly promoting upcoming gigs in Tassie, serves to remind you that you are of course in Hobart and not in a bar on Brunswick Street in Melbourne’s inner north.

Lounges are scattered around the main bar and it isn’t to difficult to find yourself a cosy corner, or a bar stool if that’s what you prefer. During busy nights, dining tables and chairs are shifted out to make way for a dance floor and standing room, but at other times you can enjoy the live entertainment with cabaret style seating by the main bar.Outside in the mid-size beer garden you are always likely to make friends with a random, eccentric local at one of the many shared tables, and if you get lucky you can plonk yourself directly under one of the powerful outdoor heaters and sizzle hot on a cold, Hobart evening.

During the week, a casual night out at the Republic Bar can be likened to a cosy night out at your local community house, whereas during the day you may stumble across visiting ‘mainland’ musicians mixing it with a local cricket team in the beer garden in between a few quiet rounds, or a local who stopped by to read the Hobart street press on offer or just to chill out for a bit. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Bar can still be as casual as you want it to be, yet with the right amount of ambience and mix of clientele to embrace your evening aspirations, whatever they may be.

The Bar features a broad selection of local, national and international live entertainment playing anything from blues, jazz, rock, acoustic or world music every night of the week, and an upstairs room is available to hire for private functions. And in between gigs there is always something soothing playing on the go to keep you inspired and feeling at home.

The Republic also houses local exhibits in its dining area on a regular basis.

Drinks are reasonably priced with a selection of beers, including Tasmanian drops, from $3.80 for an eight ounce of draught to $14 for a pint of Guinness, wine from $4.50 and spirits from $6.50. The kitchen serving gourmet pub garb with some local flavours is open for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and dinner seven days a week with price options ranging from around $5 to around $35.

The Republic is open from 3pm until around midnight Monday to Tuesday and from noon to late during the rest of the week, but no later than 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. A cover charge may apply in the evenings.

The Republic Bar is a 15 to 20 minute walk north of Hobart’s CBD area. Public buses stop close by on Elizabeth Street and a taxi rank is conveniently available at the front door. Parking is available close by.
