Review of The Hub

Review by Caitlan Gallagher

For a quiet drink on a Sunday night The Hub is the perfect place. I went there for the first time on my 18th birthday. During the day it was always a cafe in my eyes, but at night it had been transformed into a dream, vintage getaway. It was only I and three friends who went there, but with so many things around the room to get the conversation going there was never an awkward silence.

The interior is decorated with celebrity collages, quirky book pages and odd antiques that cover the walls and ceiling. The Hub offers comfort and style as there are relaxing leather couches, perfect for a cool drink. It is truly a transformation from reality.

In addition, the service was worth more than 5 stars, as we received menus almost as soon as we had taken our seats. We were served our drinks within the first 10 minutes of ordering them and they were definitely worth ordering.

Most people who were there on the night that I went were university students and around the age of 18 to 25 years old. The people there are dressed in casual, comfortable clothes and are very friendly so we felt inside of our comfort zones.

It is not very often that you can go out for a quiet drink and it not be at a pub or a hotel, but The Hub offers the perfect alternative for a nice relaxing Mojito or Sex on the Beach. As the menu offers a variety of alcoholic beverages from beer and wine to cocktails it is suitable for all kinds of people. My personal favourite was the Hawaiian Summer Breeze for $14, which was a cocktail containing pineapple juice with mixed fruits and vodka: sweet drinks are always my favourite. Most drinks are reasonably priced ranging from around $5 to $22.

The Hub may also be a resort for pre-drinks as it serves drinks from an earlier time than most nightclubs. So before you lose your friends and get all sweaty out on the dance floor at the all clubs you can catch up for a drink or two. There are also meals served of a night with your drinks, so you can grab a meal too.

I now have The Hub at Varsity on Facebook and they have recently started a Twitter account which offers the public a variety of offers and specials on particular nights. There are also notices of the live entertainment and gigs that perform there on weekends: that’s always a bonus. My friends also notified me that happy hour is on from 3.30pm until 5.30pm every night for cheap drinks.

In all honesty, I believe that The Hub is a must have experience even if you don’t like the chilled atmosphere. It is only a 30 second walk from Lake Orr and the views there are serene. In my nightlife experience at The Hub I have discovered that it is the perfect place to kick-back, relax and enjoy something out of the blue and completely new.
