Review of Death Valley

Written by James Breene

Deep in suburbia along the Morningside shopping strip lies Death Valley, a hole-in-the-wall craft beer bar that caters to locals and newcomers looking for something out of the ordinary and out of the City-Valley nexus. The bar has carved an identity in the local community by attracting customers of all ages since opening in February this year for beer festival Brewsvegas. Whether you’re looking for an exceptional beer, a game of pinball or a hearty meal from the Red Robbin Supper Truck out back, Death Valley has you covered.

Clad in moody lighting, original art, and friendly and knowledgeable staff, Death Valley offers a place to chill out and enjoy the atmosphere, try a new brew, and satisfy your palate. Every aspect of the venue, from the crafted timber wall-hung tables to the car bench seat in the corner, shouts creative thinking and good times. Customers have the option of sitting inside near the vibrant pinball machines and neon lit bar or kicking back on the deck outside. Haunted summer camp act as the visual inspiration for this spooky fun addition to the suburban bar scene.

The bar is open Wednesday through to Sunday. Wednesdays are perfect for quieter socialising while Thursday and Friday nights rev up for more serious fun. Sundays you can fill up on dollar wings, a great way to wrap up the week.

Beers are sourced from local, national, and international craft beer companies. During winter, the focus is on darker beers like black and regular India Pale Ales and imported stouts and porters with a bit of kick to spice up a cold night. The constantly changing beer menu is endorsed, and well explained, by the staff from their preferred brewers of talent and reputation. They also sell their own beer and do tap takeovers with local and national brewers.

Food out the back is captained by Rory Doyle who has come on board to create unique burgers and hot dogs, pub style food with a creative twist. Add in smoked meat and soups from scratch inspired by what’s in season and you have range of delicious options and daily specials.

Death Valley operates as front-of-house for their eponymous record label where they acquire and represent bands through vinyl and collaborations. They hope to run more public events around Brisbane for their music.

Singles, couples, families, pinball, craft beer, and food fans can all find something to enjoy at Death Valley. A child friendly approach sees families are welcome. It’s a place where locals who know it keep coming back and a destination bar for visitors to come and find a new favourite. Death Valley is no nonsense; they like beers, and they like to help people enjoy themselves in a relaxed environment that’s a little bit different.
