Clever Little Tailor Review

Review by Josh Orken

Small boutique bars tucked away in nondescript alleys are part of an emerging scene in Adelaide, one such establishment being Clever Little Tailor. Located on uber trendy Peel Street, Clever Little Tailor, or CLT, opened its doors in April 2013, and has since become the place to start the night for the city’s young professional crowd, with most patrons lying in the 25-35 age range.

Upon entering through the low profile front door, you are met with a small room with the bar occupying one side, a few tables and chairs on the other, and a standing benchtop running through the middle. The brick and stonework is tastefully exposed and meshes well with the visible timber trusses. Urban hip-hop beats provide some aural exitement, whilst not polluting the air with noise. At the far side of the venue is a lofted seated area, with patrons above able to scan the whole crowd. The vibe at CLT is great, very relaxed while still being relatively classy. The lighting is perfect for the mood, and really complements the exposed stonework and illuminates the liquor rack nicely. The toilets are immaculate, but are very open. There is a shared vanity area, and in the toilets I felt as though it wouldn’t be unthinkable to hear the happenings in the other sex’s bathroom. Thankfully that isn’t actually a problem.

The bar is well stocked with unusual varieties of liquor, so you won’t guzzling pints of Superdry. There are several wines available, as well as three unique tap beers, one of which is the house Pilsner. The real attraction at the bar is the vast array of cocktails to choose from, and you can get the mixologist to make one of your own concoctions. The staff are very friendly and chatty considering how busy they are, and they know their business well. Comprehensive information on all of the drinks is available on request. While on the pricey side, the drinks at Clever Little Tailor are worth it for their quality. As far as food goes, some gourmet nibbles and charcuterie are available as a side, but no substantial meals are on offer.

Whether you are starting the night off with a quiet drink, looking to mix with a cool crowd, or settling down for some late night cocktails, Clever Little Tailor is a great spot for all occaisions. The nightlife scene in Adelaide is being refreshed by bars like CLT popping up around town; let’s hope it really flourishes. Who knows, maybe one day Adelaideans will be able to visit Melbourne and throw off a few high-nosed scoffs at their outdated hipster rooftop-terrace-cafe-dive bars.
